Smart Energy: Renewable. Efficient. Green.
Making New History
On a high, dusty plateau near Santa Fe, New Mexico, during World War Two and in deepest secrecy, world-class scientists at Los Alamos labored mightily and brought forth the world's first nuclear weapons. Popular name for enterprise: The Manhattan Project.

This web site introduces a new Manhattan Project, one that is right for our time and place. Called SMART ENERGY, it is very different from the Manhattan Project of sixty years ago. The new project is benign, not lethal. It will involve all ages. It is public, not top secret. It will happen all across America -- in kitchens, factory assembly lines, classrooms, architects' offices, scientific laboratories, automobile sales rooms, shopping malls, government agency offices, think tanks, corporate board rooms and the halls of Congress.

It will give all of us a constructive way to deal with our anger, our grief and our post-9/11 fears.

The goal of SMART ENERGY: to give birth to a bold, bipartisan, environmentally healthy energy strategy for our nation--one based on renewables, energy efficiency and conservation.

The role of this web site is twofold.

First, to sign up large numbers of Americans of all ages, since numbers are important to those who make policy in the U.S.

Second, to e-mail solid information about significant energy issues as they arise in Congress and the Administration. With this information, we will be able to exert effective influence on the people who can make SMART ENERGY happen.

We hope that you -- individuals and organizations -- will want to be part of the new Manhattan Project. It is our lifeline to a saner future.
